This Is A Prayer For You, was featured on The Indie YYC on June 10, 2020, after being reviewed and vetted by Wakefield Brewster.

I wrote this poem for my niece who is bi-racial. After George Floyd was murdered I asked what I could possibly do to support her in the aftermath. She, like so many others around the world and across Canada and the US, felt this deeply. She asked me to consider going to a protest march.

I thought about that. We had all been asked to stay home, work from home, not gather in groups or crowds. But I could not let go of the idea that I had to, that I wanted to do something that might make a difference. Somehow.

And so I attended Calgary’s first Black Lives Matter protest march on June 3rd, 2020. The resulting written poem, and the raw and unrehearsed video, which I sent first to my niece and then to Wakefield, can be played here.
